The term "Best Boy" refers to an important position within the film crew, which can be found in the electrical (Best Boy Electric) and grip (Best Boy Grip) departments. The Best Boy is the main assistant to the Gaffer (Chief Electrician) or the Key Grip (Chief Grip). Although the title sounds masculine, the role is gender neutral and can be performed by any qualified person.
The main tasks of a Best Boy vary depending on the department:
Best Boy Electric: In this role, the Best Boy assists the Gaffer with the planning, set-up and maintenance of all lighting equipment. Duties include managing the electrical team, monitoring power requirements, ordering materials and ensuring all safety regulations are met.
Best Boy Grip: As the right hand of the Key Grip, the Best Boy Grip is responsible for the rigging, setup and safety of camera support systems such as cranes, dollies and tracks. This role also includes coordinating the grip team, equipment logistics and often budget monitoring.
A successful Best Boy must have a range of skills and qualifications:
Technical knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of lighting technology and grip equipment is critical.
Organizational skills: Efficient management of equipment, personnel and time is essential for the smooth running of the set.
Communication skills: The Best Boy must be able to communicate effectively with various team members, departments and external suppliers.
Problem-solving skills: The ability to react quickly to technical or logistical problems is essential.
The role of Best Boy can be very challenging as it involves a high level of responsibility and often a stressful working day. The challenges include long working hours, the physical demands of setting up and dismantling heavy equipment and the pressure of always having to react quickly to unforeseen situations.
Many Best Boys start their careers as ordinary crew members, gaining experience and working their way up through reliability and learned skills. Further training and specialized courses can help to deepen the required expertise.
The film and television industry is constantly growing, and qualified technicians like the Best Boy are always in demand. With increasing production of films and series, especially through streaming services, the prospects for this role are positive. In addition, a career as a Best Boy offers the opportunity to progress to more senior positions such as Gaffer or Key Grip.
The origin of the term is not fully understood, but it is believed to come from the early days of theater or film when the "Best Boy" was simply the best sidekick the gaffer or key grip could find.
