What qualities should a protagonist have?

In principle, any layperson ("people") who is interested in working in television can become a protagonist. No matter whether fat, thin, old, young, tall or short.

However, it takes courage and a great deal of self-confidence to stand in front of a camera and feel comfortable in your own skin. In addition, prospective protagonists should be willing to give an insight into their lives and talk openly and honestly about certain topics.

Further requirements are determined by the format of the program to be produced. For the scripted reality soap "Berlin Tag & Nacht", for example, extroverted personalities with an individual style or a striking appearance are sought.

What vocational training is required?

Theoretically, as a protagonist you can get started straight away, as you don't need any training or acting experience for this type of job. You play yourself, i.e. you can be who you are without having to slip into another role and pretend.

How do I convince people in the application process for a first job?

The first step is usually to send a written application to the client. Check that all your personal details are correct and up to date. Send high-quality photos of yourself and attach a personal letter of motivation to your application in which you introduce yourself and explain briefly and concisely why you are applying for this position, why you are the right person and what you can contribute to the success of the show or program.

If your application is successful, you will usually receive an invitation to the audition straight away. If you do not hear from the client after two weeks, you can assume that the position has already been filled. If this happens, don't be sad and keep applying for jobs. Your efforts will pay off at some point!
